What does the scrubbing material consist of?

The scrubber material is Copper Oxide and Aluminum Oxide catalyst -- 80-90% Alumina and 10-14% Copper Oxide per MSDS.

What background gases can the scrubber tolerate?

N2, Ar, He, H2 and CO2.

What is the expected life of the scrubber?

With regards to the 3060E O2 scrubber, the scrubber can scrub 200 cc of pure 100% O2 (per vendor O2 scrubber life information). Using this information, calculations were made.

TAI has generated a formula depending on flow rate used for scrubber life in two cases, 1 ppm and 400 ppb.

Note: Enter flow in box provided and life calculations are automatically calculated. We assumed 70% efficiency due to some air exposure during initial connection.

-- If 1 ppm of O2 is being scrubbed at a rate of 150 ccm, this translates to 2.5 years of life. Considering that during the connection of the scrubber to the analyzer, the scrubber is exposed to air (21% O2) for a brief time, the life of the scrubber will be decreased to approximately 1.5 to 1.75 yrs (at 1ppm at 150 ccm). If the scrubber is exposed to air even longer, the life will decrease substantially.

-- If 400 ppb of O2 is being scrubbed at a rate of 150 ccm, than the scrubber life increases by factor (1ppm / 400ppb = 1000ppb / 400ppb = 2.5 times). So, 1.5 to 1.75 years times the 2.5 factor = 3.75 to 4.37 years at 400 ppm level at 150 ccm flow.

FYI, we have scrubber in the lab which supplies many O2 instruments (as many as 15 units - Model 316 and 3000 type), and the scrubber has lasted 2.5 years.

What are the dimensions of the scrubber?

The scrubber subassemblies are all orbital welded and have VCR compression fittings (inlet and outlet) - not Swagelok fittings. Dimensions are available in this pdf file.

Please advise the purpose of a particulate filter.

The purpose of a particulate filter in an analyzer or sample system, is to prevent minute particles of anything that may be in the gases, from getting into the analyzer.

In the case of these analyzers, the gas flow into the instrument is set and maintained by orifices (restrictors). If the filter is not in line, these orifices can get clogged and the gas flow into the instrument will be reduced or stopped. Resulting in bad performance or no performance of instrument.

As the particulates builds up on the filter, the filter will also start to restrict the gas flow. Therefore the filter will have to be replaced as part of normal maintenance of the equipment.

An example of the purpose of a particulate filter in use is the MAX5. Look in the MAX5 (or piping diagram). There is a small filter immediately after the scrubber. Its purpose is to catch any particles of the pura-fil media dust in the scrubber before it continues into the sensors.
